Tenhou Basics

This page will teach you how to use the simplest features on Tenhou. Once you finish this page, you should be ready to play some mahjong online! For a more detailed guide, visit http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Step 1: Registering an ID

Go to tenhou.net and click “Play”. You will come to this window:

Type the username you want to use in the box (up to 8 characters) and click on the button circled in red. Sex is circled in blue. Male is 男 and female is 女. Once you do that you will receive an ID number in the form of ID########-########. Save this because you will be using it to login in the future.

Step 2: The Lobby

This is an example of what a lobby looks like. To queue for a match, simply click on the button for the game you want to join. First row is nashi rules. Second row is ari rules. Third row is ari with aka dora. Fourth row is ari, aka dora, and reduced thinking time. Fifth row is 3-player with aka dora. Sixth row is 3-player with aka dora and reduced thinking time. The left column is East Round only while the right column is a full hanchan.

Step 3: Playing mahjong

There are a few important Japanese characters that you should know while playing.

パス is pass. It will cancel making any calls.

チー is chi.

ポン is pon.

カン is kan.

リーチ is riichi.

ロン is ron.

ツモ is tsumo.

Step 4: Have fun!

Of course there is much more to Tenhou and mahjong than I just described. This is the bare minimum you need to know to operate Tenhou. If you would like to learn more about Tenhou’s features, Arcturus is a great resource. The gameplay and interface are very intuitive, so you should be able to navigate it even without knowing Japanese.
